What’s the difference between Montessori and Early Years

Posted in Parents Blog

Montessori is a philosophy or style of working and activities, which delivers (and exceeds) the requirements of the EYFS.  Combined, it provides a unique way of equipping pre-schoolers with the tools, skills and confidence that they need to succeed in the next stage of their education journey.

A planned and ordered environment that follows the Montessori Philosophy

The curriculum at Riverside Nursery in Battersea, is founded on the Montessori Philosophy and principles, but guided by the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).When a child reaches the age of two and a half, they can officially start the Montessori Curriculum, but in practice, each and every little one that attends Riverside, irrespective of their age, is introduced to the core principles of the Montessori Philosophy from day one, as it shapes all of the activities and learning experiences that they are introduced to.

Empowering children to be responsible for their own education, under the guidance of a Montessori teacher

Children are given the freedom to choose what they want to do so that they can develop a broad set of skills from an early age. At all times, this is guided by a specially trained Montessori teacher.

The Montessori Curriculum and EYFS –  preparing children for KS1 of the National Curriculum

The EYFS covers children from birth to 31st August, following their 5th birthday.  Like the Montessori Curriculum, it aims to help youngsters achieve a number of core learning outcomes. It’s grouped under 6 broad areas of learning: Communication, Language and Literacy, Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Creative Development and Physical Development.

There are many that think the Montessori Curriculum far surpasses the core learning outcomes as outlined under the EYFS framework, and, therefore, better prepares children for Key Stage 1 of the British National Curriculum.

What is the Montessori philosophy?

The philosophy/approach is founded on a number of core beliefs – that children are all unique and need to be given the freedom to choose, and should be treated as individuals; that they have huge potential to do well in life; that they want to learn and keep busy and that, whilst they might like to be like adults, they do not learn or experience life in the same way as adults do.

Riverside Nursery, Battersea provides little ones with a home from home experience.  When you need to be at work and have to leave your baby or child with someone else, you can be confident that we nurture and encourage your son or daughter, through his or her tender early years.  Whether your child joins our beautiful baby suite, lower or upper school, our amazing team will make sure they go home having had the best day ever!
